About Us

Pan Equus Animal Sanctuary is an established public nonprofit 501 (c)(3) action based organization dedicated to showing compassion while providing care and comfort to all animals within our reach.

Pan Equus Animal Sanctuary (PEAS) is an amazing animal sanctuary dedicated to providing care and comfort for abused and neglected animals at all stages of their life. The farm is operated entirely through donations and volunteers, who work hard to enhance the lives of the animals in our care while enriching their own lives.

We are home to an assortment of farm animals — horses, cows, goats, pigs, sheep, chickens, ducks. We even have peacocks!

Our animals come to us in different ways, for lots of reasons. In many cases, we are their last hope. Look at a few of their pictures and read their stories. You’ll fall in love with them and understand why we can’t turn them away.

Co-founder Dr. Judy is the full-time caretaker and matriarch of the farm. Our resident veterinarian, she provides love and care to the animals 24/7. But this is nothing new. Caring for animals has been a life-long passion for Dr Judy, beginning with her choice to become a vegetarian at 12 years old to her interest in rescuing animals while in vet school at Michigan State University.

The needs are many and each animal is different. You can make a HUGE difference by sponsoring your favorite animal(s) and ensure that they receive all of the special things they need to keep happy and healthy in their forever home.

Meet SOME of the Animals

Leo the Cow

Leo

Medical Marvel

Meet Leo. This handsome fellow came to PEAS, together with his mother Tasha, when he was only 12 hours old from a dairy farm in North Branch. Male calves aren’t useful to a dairy farm so he was saved from eventual slaughter.

Now three years old, this Jersey/Holstein cross steer is a bit of a medical marvel and celebrity here and at Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Looking into those big brown eyes, you would never know about the health challenges he’s endured. Click the button below to learn more about Leo’s amazing journey and why he is so special.

More About Leo
Horses - Poppy and Hazel

Poppy & Hazel

Terrific Twosome

These two girls are two PEAS in a pod. They are BFF's that are always together. Although they look a lot alike, it is unknown if they are related. You can tell them apart by the markings on their faces. Hazel has the white blaze on her face and Poppy has the stripe and snip on hers.

We have very little information on these beautiful girls. Before they came to PEAS they were left on an abandoned farm. We believe they are Percheron crosses and about 15 years old. What we know for sure is that they are lovely ladies and we are happy to have them safe at PEAS.

Mule - Rupert

Rupert

Mr. Personality

Rupert is our only mule. A Mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. They are bred to get the best traits from each parent. Mules are stolid, patient, and generally even-tempered.

Rupert came to us after being ill treated by a trainer. The result being, Robert is now unridable. Despite a rough beginning, Rupert now spends his days living his best life. He loves people, especially the ladies, and is always up for pets and love from anyone he meets.

Sheep - Maya

Maya

Woolly and Wonderful

Meet Maya, one of our woolly sheep. Maya was raised for 4H and was saved from slaughter with three other sheep. Her beautiful markings and expressive face make her a PEAS favorite. Maya will even come when you call her name (but only if she feels like it).

One of our favorite days at PEAS, is sheep shearing day. It is so fun to see our big woolly sheep getting their Spring haircuts!  They go from puffy to sleek in a matter of minutes. When you come to one of our Open Barns, come out and count our sheep. They are so cute we guarantee it won’t put you to sleep!

Goat - Darla

Darla

Little Momma

Say hello to Darla, a 13-year-old Boer goat who was used as a breeding doe her entire life.

When we were asked if she could retire at PEAS, our only condition was that she come with her kids, essentially rescuing them from becoming dinner. This sweet girl came to us with her twin girls Cassie and Millie. They are very much a happy family!

Boer goats are the number 1 meat goat worldwide.

Sheep - Toni

Pearl

Princess Pearl the Mistress of Mischief

Pearl is one of our three pigs at PEAS. She lives up to her nickname of Princess at the farm and demands attention from our volunteers. She always has time to snuggle with Fred and Ellie and play with Hanu and Barney who are all cows!

Pearl came to PEAS through the big heart of a girl raising Pearl in the 4H program. Once she realized what the sad fate would be for her beloved pig, she begged her parents to save her. That’s where PEAS stepped in and rescued her where she is affectionately, Princess Pearl, our beloved pig!
